Overview of various applications of mathematics useful for students in any major. The topics covered include operations on numbers; applications of linear relationships; percentages and exponential relationships; basic probability; and descriptive statistics.

The goal of this course is to foster a learning community among first-year Indigenous students in a culturally relevant way such that they develop skills for academic success. Through group discussions, speaker presentations, Elder visits, and hands-on activities, students will learn academic, library, introductory research, and study skills. They will become familiar with the services available to them as Indigenous students, be exposed to speakers from various departments on campus as well as the community, and receive support in overcoming roadblocks they may encounter in their transition to university.

In a culturally supportive environment, this course builds on skills and concepts developed in Indigenous Student Success 0521 with a focus on academic and career paths. Through experiential learning, students will be able to explore their discipline(s) of interest and potential career paths to help focus their choices and studies going forward. Elders and professionals from various departments on campus and from the community will be resources for this course. Students will receive continued support in overcoming roadblocks they may encounter in completing the certificate and transitioning into their academic program of choice.
