WHMIS & Chemical Safety


The University's Chemical Safety Standard outlines requirements for ensuring the safe use, handling and disposal of chemical substances in research and academic activites. Additional details on the University's WHMIS program are provided below.

Refer to the Laboratory Chemical and Safety Procedures Manual for general information on lab safety and chemical handling in labs.

Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System - WHMIS 2015

WHMIS legislation changed in 2015. Full compliance with the new WHMIS 2015 system was required by December 1, 2018. This means all hazardous products must have the new WHMIS 2015 labels and Safety Data Sheets available.

CHEMATIX Chemical Inventory Management System

The University has implemented the CHEMATIX chemical inventory system to facilitate the management and inventory of chemicals used for various academic and operational needs within its campus.

All laboratories, workshops, storage areas, etc. where chemicals are used and/or stored must be registered in CHEMATIX.

DUTY-FREE ALCOHOL (ETHANOL) has specific inventory and use requirements.
