International Sociological Association Prizes

The International Sociological Association offers a prize and two essay competitions for scholars.

  • The Varga Prize for New Generation ScholarsThis award recognizes an outstanding new paper by a scholar who is at most three years beyond the PhD. It is named for our late Honorary President, Ivan Varga, who was well-known for supporting scholars just entering the profession. This is a monetary award of at least 500 euros. The award also covers the winner’s unreimbursed travel costs to enable presentation of the paper at the World Congress. 
  • Research Competition in Comparative Russian-European Studies: The Council of Young Scientists of the Faculty of Sociology (St. Petersburg State University) in cooperation with the Center for German and European Studies (St. Petersburg State University—Bielefeld University), supported by DAAD, are glad to announce a Russian-European competition of research papers by young scientists interested in comparative Russian-European studies. Winners will receive a prize of up to 1275 Euro to conduct an empirical research in Europe or Russia. The papers (unpublished as well as recently published) should address topical issues in social sciences and humanities.
  • Essay Competition for New Scholars from the Economic SouthResearch Committee 32 (Women in Society) of the International Sociological Association is organizing a world-wide essay competition to stimulate the development of comparative feminist theoretical frameworks and empirical studies on migration/ citizenship/ identity/diversity or their intersections, in the era of Globalization. These papers should be informed by theoretical and empirical analyses in examining the impact of globalizing processes on any of the following (i.e., migration, citizenship, identity, diversity) on issues such as education, work contexts, state and international policies, ethnicity, race, knowledge production and social justice, with particular concern for women and gender.
