This major collaborative research project of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada focuses on Francophone communities in North America for over 400 years. It questions the past, present and future of Francophone communities and puts the individual and his language at the heart of the change in francophone societies. This project aims to assess the real impact of linguistic and cultural contacts in multicultural communities and to examine the conditions for maintaining French and other languages in contact situations. It fosters reflection on the contemporary issues facing Canada and the Francophonie in terms of cultural diversity and the vitality of linguistic minorities.
