Am I the only one...

    ... who finds this

      ... Canada Day Flag

        ... offensive ?

Looking around the city for items to celebrate Canada Day, I was shocked by this store display.

More Reactions...

First of all, I do not see this flag as a Canada Day Flag.......but I do see it as a depiction of the special relaionship we have with our neighbors to the south.I am wondering if our neighbors to the south who see it,are thinking the same way as you do.

As a proud Canadian with over 20 years service in Canada’s Air Force I find this particularly offensive. All too often, citizens of Canada willingly display and accept symbols of the USA in their everyday life. I find it odd that so many people would purchase and wear clothing, such as a leather motorcycle jacket (very expensive item to buy to ride your Canadian plated vehicle), that is really just the USA Flag made from different materials. Far too many individuals fly the American flag or stick a sticker to their car, mostly I think out of a feeling of friendship, but how many Americans do you see flying our flag? None.

It is absolutely reprehensible that people would make this conjoined flag in the effort to make money, but for the poor misguided souls that would purchase this item, perhaps Canada isn’t really the place for them. You say on your website that this is a Canada Day Flag? Who would have the nerve, lack of knowledge, or thirst for money at all costs to sell or market this as a Canada Day flag?

Of course not everyone will dislike this flag or the idea behind it, Dr. Frankenstein would have been proud!

A Proud Canadian.

I was watching CBC this morning and saw an interview with a fellow who found this flag in a novelty shop(?). I find it outrageous and insulting. That "Snowbirds" would want to display this in the U.S. on their regular jaunts there is disturbing, and makes me wonder how loyal anyone is that is interested in displaying this degradation. Sort of reminds me of those American citizens who remained loyal to the British while their used-to-be friends and neighbors conducted a revolution back in the 1700s, eh? Anyway, the makers and distributors of this insult to Canada should perhaps live in the U.S. instead of Canada: They'd be at home with the psychos, criminals, and sanctimonious SOBs that seem to make up the majority of that deplorable society.

Why would you find a flag that promotes neighbours getting along to be offensive? I think it is a great idea.  Over the years we have met many friendly Americans and we chuckle at the idea that Canadians  think that they are friendly when, in fact, they constantly promote an anti-American sentiment from beer commercials to magazines. What are we so afraid of? We may not agree with their politics but many Americans don't agree with it either.

Let's be friendly ourselves and wave that flag with a smile.

I not only love that flag, I have one similar that is even nicer than that one.  The two countries rule and should be united all though the US is a stronger nation. There are many people who feel unison while you have magazines like Maclean's promoting anti-americanism by publishing articles they build on the subject. Right now they have a president that is out of line but then we get Prime Minister's that are out of line too. I want to see unison with one government that is for the people. Neither of the governments show that. Right now both countries people have problems in health care. This area is the countries people. Pretty sad ehhh!

Thumbs up to this flag you ask about.

A canadian who would like unison.

I am writing in response to this morning's TV interview regarding the dual American/Canadian Flag.

This flag is not new. Although I have not seen and actual flying mounted one, a replica of this has been around since 911. We winter in Florida as so many do and we had flags like this in our windows after the disaster. We as all other Canadians did not lose our pride in our heritage, but simply chose to show our support at the time.

Being such close neighbours and spending time as their winter guests I certainly don't see any difficulty in showing respect to the two flags, albeit they are mounted on the same pole. It is simply a sign of respect and should not be seen as disrespect to our heritage.

Hello! I am a 31 yr old living with my husband and children near Lanark, Ontario. (1 hr. s/west of Ottawa). I saw the newsclip regarding manipulation of our Canadian flag, and heard you were requesting feedback. My husband and I recently saw one of the mongrel American/Canadian flags like those shown on T.V. and were appalled. We don't mind people showing their support for the States, but do it separately from our flag. We prefer if people have both flags, the Canadian one is larger or higher up, but that is just our preference. Do you think we'd ever see an American sporting one of those flags? Not a chance! You don't mess with the flag. We prefer if people have both flags, the Canadian one is larger or higher up, but that is just our preference.

Another abomination is hanging up near Balderson, Ontario - at Balderson Orchards. Two blue bars have been added to the flag, inside the red bars. Arghhh! We don't know if it's to support Quebec or the U.S., but we think it's appalling. When I was a child, I was a member of the Girl Guides - we were told how to treat (respect) the flag of Canada (or any other flag for that matter). It would be nice to see others do the same. Anyway, that's our feedback. Happy Canada Day!

I listened to your comment on the destruction of the US and Canada flags.

From my point of view I didn't see this. I only saw an entirely new created flag to commemorate a long weekend which celebrates July 1st in Canada and July 4th in the USA.

I thought it was in great loving fellowship that a new flag was created for our one, North America, celebrating our free nations.

It in no way gave me a sense that our individuality or our flag was being threatened.

Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day

I am not at all offended by this flag and actually have one flying at my trailer in Florida as a sign of respect while on their soil and to indicate my wish for a united relationship between two countries who share a common open border. That is not to say that I agree with all decisions made by the states but I try to remind myself how it could be when you read about the number of bordering countries in the middle east who have endured decades of wars and unrest.
***
No I Don't find this flag offensive...

Why you ask:

Half my family is Canadian and Half is American...I am Proudly a CANADIAN.

I am usually camping in Kingston, ON during this time of year (the last 7 years, not this year)...there we celebrate Canada day...my sister from the USA comes up to celebrate with us...then we all head back to the USA to celebrate on July 4th.

I purchased my flags several years ago in Sterling, NY, when we went down to the Renaissance Festival but my flags are the opposite with the Canadian Flag at the top and the American flag on the bottom.

Mr.haig should get a life..typical canadian with all the problems going on this country that's the least of our worries. We should be trying to harmonize relations with our southern neighbours not divide them further. In some parts of quebec you can't fly a canadian flag, that's okay nobody says anything about that(can't offend those quebeckers you know),but try to show our american friends that we care about them...heaven forbid!!! In regards to those dollar stores that removed them...your gutless...a few people complain and you cave in..that's canada for ya..the minority always rules the majority.I wish i could get one of those flags,i'd fly it proudly!
***
I agree with you about that flag being offensive. Obviously somethings that Canada and the United States do are definitely 'family' like Bush declared at the time of 9/11. You don't treat family the way the United States has been treating Canada. Their idea of free trade is get as much as we can take away from everyone without giving anything in return.

Thank-you.
***
Oh, for Pete's sake GET OVER IT. Just what our rabid anti-American Trudeau minions in central Canada need. The whining and insecurity that Canadians continually display is truly embarrassing. Leave the USA-bashing to the media; They seem to be doing a bang-up job of it.

Proudly ALBERTAN

I don't see why you are so offended by this. It is a novelty item, not an official flag. Who cares.
***
I have one of these flags. I have purchased several more and sent them to close friends in Canada and the US. They are a solemn tribute to the closeness of our two nations. Being an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, I have many good friends in the American Legion and we use these flags to show our mutual respect and admiration for the causes of freedom we have jointly fought for.

The only people who would find this flag offensive would insult our veterans and deny that Canada and the US share a common bond of loving freedom and democracy.
***
I think it is in poor taste usa should keep their own flag and canada should keep our flag pure for canadians. our sons and daugthers died in recent wars and they were very proud of their flag. thank you for the your web site so we can express our concerns.
***
What next..burning it
***
My husband and I find this flag very offensive and upsetting. We take pride in the fact that we are Canadian and NOT American. We in no way shape or form want to be considered joined at the hip to our southern neighbours, whose ideals and values are not our’s. After all that has transpired in the past couple of years, we are upset that someone would have created such a flag, and you can be CERTAIN that it would NOT be embraced by U.S. citizens.
***
What is wrong with this picture , You cannot be very proud of your country when you are selling this item ..Not sure where their roots are but I think they have it all wrong, Canada is one country and not two ...Yes this is very offensive to me and my family ..I was raise in Canada and proud to be Canadian ..What a shame this is happening to our country.
***
Thank you for raising the media awareness about this tasteless "flag". It is nice to hear other Canadians stand up for our countries precious symbols and interesting heritage. (Of course, Ontarians, tend to think we are the biggest patriots - so it is really great to hear you are from Alberta.)
Well done!
Happy Canada Day from Ontario.
***
I find the half-American half-Canadian flag to be disgusting! We are uniquely Canadian and our Country should not be associated with the Americans in that manner.
***
Who thought this flag was a good idea?! I find it offensive as well as ugly. Canada is an independent nation with it's own beautiful flag to celebrate. We do not need this monstrosity! Please destroy all of these flags before it further solidifies America's delusion that Canada is the 51st state!

“A flag is a flag. You don't mess with them.”

That was about my thinking when they introduced the maple leaf flag.

This current flag is a contrived device implemented by a Liberal government, part of a program to denigrate and marginalize our British heritage in an attempt to pander to Quebec.

Since this flag is a contrived construction, of little historical significance, I don’t mind people making itinerations such as the one that has merited you comment.

Altering this flag is not an insult to our heritage, introducing it was.

I am a proud Canadian who has been married to an American Girl for 30 years and have always had some Canada/US crossed flag emblems around so I don't find this particularly offensive....

Sadly, I'm am afraid for our descendants that this flag design may be an omen of the future, but with a much smaller Maple Leaf...

What did get my ire up a little was the made in China flags Wal-Mart is selling which are orange and white.... I think they could at least tell the China manufacturer to make the flags the proper colour....

Thanks for your indulgence.

Thank you so very much for bringing this to public attention. Both my husband and I find this flag extremely offensive. I resent the fact that some, on both sides, feel we are, or should be, in the back pocket of the US. We have our own heritage, our own ideas and most importantly our own values. Too bad, we as a Nation, appear as not being quite as patriotic as Americans.

Right now I am especially irked at the continued border closure. With the news that Canada 'may' limit the export of 'bulk' drugs to the US, 'should our supply for Canadians be affected', I am particularly upset at the inference made by some American politition that it will strain Canadian/US relations. Appears they live in their own world and expect the rest of the world to agree with them, no matter what the issue. Thank you again for bringing your views to the forefront. I know there are fellow Canadians thinking just like us. Hope you get lots of responses and the count makes the news.

I had the same reaction when I saw a much larger version and large quantity of the split flag for sale at a flea market in Okanogan Falls, B.C. summer 2004. So you could understand my dismay when I saw this flag at the Aboriginal Interpretive Centre at Canada Place in Banff. Inside the Tipi they had flags all around of different countries but not a Canadian nor an American flag but the "split flag". I questioned the interpreter as to why their was no Canadian and American flag as it was an insult to citizens of both countries she replied that the flags were given to them by "Canada Place" to display. I do appreciate the fact that you brought this to the attention of the media and fully agree with you that "a flag is a flag".
***
To me this does not represent Our Canada. This flag represents our relationship with USA. To fly this flag on Canada Day would be to say that we wish the two countries were one. I do not feel that way. I am proud of the country we live in and would not want to be associated with USA.

I saw you on the news this morning. I grew up in Cardston, Alberta. My father served in WWII and was the longest standing President of the Royal Canadian Legion. This is where he was when they decided to change the flag from the Union Jack to the present flag and to this day I can still see the pain in his eyes and hear the pain in his voice when this was done. As he said, and I wholeheartedly agree, they didn't fight for the Mapleleaf but the Union Jack and to change it was complete disrespect for the men and women who served in WWI and II. I agree 100% so yes, I think the flag that was shown on tv this morning is a complete disgrace to all the men and women who served to protect Canada. I think maybe this flag was someone's idea of what may be coming if the Liberal government continues to ignore the West. I am sure that there are a lot of veterans who are turning over in their graves over this and my father is definitely one of them. There is so much disrespect to our veterans and I think this just adds to the pile.
***
I heard about this flag from the interview on CTV newsnet and I, too, am outraged. This is a disgrace to our Canadian flag. Good for you for speaking up.

Thank you, Happy Canada Day!
***
I find the flag very offensive. We are close enough to the states without having a joint flag. Thank you
***
Hello there, After seeing you on TV I thought hmmmm.. you seemed to be so upset about Our Canadian flag being mixed with Our American flag.. I for one thought.. hey get over it.. first of all I am American married to a Canadian,, my father god rest his soul. was born on Canadian soil.. Our family has a wonderful mix American / Canadian Heritage. Growing up state side. (Canada was always reffered to as North America) I respect Canada just as I do America and feel proud to have both flags displayed as one. One Nation so to speak,, there is no other country Id be more proud of than Canada to be along side the stars and stripes. I for one think its grand.

Just my view on that flag.

You are not alone in being upset over the hybrid flag. I too am upset after seeing you on TV this morning. I haven't a problem flying both flags together-but not combined. I was watching a late night American talk show this week and was already annoyed at hearing the host refer to Canada as America's most Northern State. So, when I saw you this morning I felt compelled to write and tell you that I support you. I bear our Southern neighbours no ill will, but I am a Canadian and I am proud of it. I am also proud of our flag and what it means - let's keep it Canadian eh?

God Bless America and all she does and has done for Canada.

The Brits sucked the colonial blood out of out First and Second World War troops ("Remember Hong Kong and Hang Mackenzie King").

The Americans leased our coastal air bases, gave us MILLIONS OF DOLLARS in Lend-Lease Credits, which were forgiven after the Second World War. The Americans thought enough of us to help Canada put a fleet of Merchant Ships into Convoy Duty in all seas and oceans. They trained our troops and Air Force pilots, and protected our skies with their B-52 Bombers' twelve and fourteen hour flights daily during the Cold War with the Stalinist Comrats. The Americans have given thousands of 'We Ordinary Canadians Who Have Served Under Their Good Orderly Direction' every consideration in National Service, Law Enforcement, Anti- Subversive Orientation, and are Our Oldest Best Friends And Trading Partners.

Anti-Americanism bias is vitriol spouted by Fruits, Nuts, and Flakey Liberal Party Hucksters controlled by French - Quebecois Leftist Collabos (sic) the late Pierre Elliot Trudeau, Jean Chretien, and the current chameleon, namely 'ti Paul Martin, Pirate Of The Carribean. ( He re-flagged his Canada Steamship Lines Cargo Vessels under the Bahamian Flag) He purports to have given his Steamship Company to his three sons. (Reminds one of a Traditional European Proverb i.e. 'Beware Of Greeks Bearing Gifts').

Canada Steamships hires non-Canadian crews, mostly offshore Jigaboos, Gooks, Charlies and Spiks with non-Canadian certification as Mariners with Able Seaman and Lifeboatman documentation.

The time is now to discontinue the hullaballoo about Karla Homolka's credibility or lack thereof prior to her release and get back to the REAL problem.

The Gutlessness of the Liberal Government in not bringing the 'Dirty Dozen French- Quebecois' who Plundered The Public Purse of MILLIONS OF DOLLARS for their own gratification and that of the Liberal Government Of The Day. Judge Gomery is a Liberal appointee and will cost the taxpayers plenty.

Yes, the sooner the 'Republic For Which It Stands' arranges to ANNEX CANADA as a Mandated Equal Partner, the better off we will be. We can then stamp out Bi-Lingualism, Quebec Separatism, Political Prostitution, Multiculturalist Pretensions , and in particular, Mickey-Mouse 'Official Bilingualism,' truly unnecessary beyond the map- lined borders of the PROVINCE OF QUEBEC, NORTHERN NEW BRUNSWICK, and a small populous incursion into the provinces of Prince Edward Island and Manitoba!

Canada is in serious trouble : Owned by unscrupulous Shmucks, run by Separatists, Corporate Grabbers who encourage Offshore Ethnic Tax- Cheating Investors and trade-union(a.k.a.Buzz Hargrove) flunkies. All this because the voter has developed a soft underbelly, and prefers Polite Deference to Agressive Activism in ridding the curmudgeons from elective seating in government.

Heed The Call Fostered By Righteous Indignation! Homos have no rights in the living rooms of Straights, thus no litigation for Same-Sex Marriages!

Remember the mystique of Sodom and Gomorrah!

Stamp Out Duplicity!

GOD BLESS AMERICA:

CANADIANS ARE AMERICANS IN THOUGHT WORD AND DEED, AND THE SOONER WE RECOGNIZE THIS ACCOMPLISHED FACT, THE SOONER WE WILL BE HAPPIER AND STRONGER FOR IT!! People are People;

Politicians can run in Rat Packs which must be driven from office for the Greater Good!

Canada is worth saving, and REAL CANADIANS are respected at home and abroad.

You know, there are some things I can tolerate, but this "flag" is absolutely disgusting! Shame on the IDIOTS who: 1. Even thought this was a good idea..... and 2. Produced this piece of crap!
***
This is unacceptable!

Who takes credit for this design? A Canadian? An American? Who?

Thank you for posting this site.

A Proud Canadian, who stands on guard for only one flag.
