The most common cause of death among voyageurs was hernia.

 

Fact: In my reading of fur trade journals from the height of the voyageur era (1774-1821), I haven't found a single death attributable to strangulated hernia (rupture), and only two cases of illness.

Most voyageur deaths were due to drowning and starvation.
