How Mallow Ireland Got It's Start |

Mallow Castle

1185 |
John, youngest son of the English King Henry II constructed a castle
to command the ford on the River Blackwater.

1589 |
In 1589 Queen Elizabeth granted the castle to Sir Thomas Norreys
but it was beyond repair and he constructed the castle above, now in ruins
on the same site

1689 |
In 1689 it was burnt by order of King James II and rendered uninhabitable

1829 |
A question of restoring the building, studied by experts and the
idea finally abandoned
|
1928 |
The ruin taken under the care of the Commissioners of Public Works
and is maintained as a National Monument

With the idea of restoring the Old Mallow Castle abandoned, the stables
for the old castle were eventually made into a charming building now known
as the modern Mallow Castle

1984 |
After almost 400 years the family sold Mallow Castle to the McGinn
family of Washington D.C.
