How Mallow Ireland Got It's Start 

 

Mallow Castle

 1185

 

John, youngest son of the English King Henry II constructed a castle to command the ford on the River Blackwater.

 1589

 

In 1589 Queen Elizabeth granted the castle to Sir Thomas Norreys but it was beyond repair and he constructed the castle above, now in ruins on the same site

 1689

 

In 1689 it was burnt by order of King James II and rendered uninhabitable

 1829

 

A question of restoring the building, studied by experts and the idea finally abandoned

 1928

 

The ruin taken under the care of the Commissioners of Public Works and is maintained as a National Monument

 

 1829

 

With the idea of restoring the Old Mallow Castle abandoned, the stables for the old castle were eventually made into a charming building now known as the modern Mallow Castle

 1984

 

After almost 400 years the family sold Mallow Castle to the McGinn family of Washington D.C.

In the February 1999 we honoured Paul Kane's birthplace...
