Fort Victoria with an Indian Village

Fort Victoria was established in 1843 by the Hudson't Bay Company as a base for fur trade operations in New Caldonia. The original fort was built in 1843 and consisted of one and two-story wooden buildings surrounded by stockades.

In 1847 the fort walls were extended to included a post office, stable, and another warehouse. The fort straddled the present Fort Street in Victoria.

Kane also made a series of paintings of Esquimalt, one of two Indian villages adjoining Fort Victoria before 1861.
