are quite small, while traces of former heavy forest growth are frequently apparent.

The last coulé passed today (That with bridge) shows a high bank of crumbled Long R. Shales capped with drift covering of usual character. The coulé examined in the morning shows similar structure, as do several seen during earlier part of the day. The drift wherever turned up in badger mounds &c shows fragments of Long R. or similar shales with pebbles of limestone, gneiss &c &c.

Seems to establish that all this part of Mt. at least has substructure of Long R. beds. (Compare heights of different localities.

Found Astracfalus caryocarpus? [Larae-fruited Ground Plum] in flower, Many miles of prairie covered with tufts of Anemone patens. Geum triflorum [Three-flowered Avens] also common.

A duck's nest was found today near the trail on the dry open prairie with as far as could be seen no water or marsh near. The bird flew off but could not tell what species. The eggs nine originally. Nest merely a hole, (apparently accidental) in the ground. In this a circle of blackish down with a space in the centre where lay the eggs.

May 27. Did not move camp. Morning blustery with a good deal of rain. Afternoon finer, but with very strong wind all day. Evening wind continues. Thunder storms passing along horizon. Pressed yesterdays plants & collected some more in woods near here. Many banks covered with wild strawberries in blossom. Lithospermum canescens [Hoary Puc-

coon] first obser-ved in flower today. Found also a specimen of Platan-

thera bracteata [Bracted Plantain?] with a few blossoms out. Many more specimens but only in bud. Found Trillium cernuum [Nodding Wake-robin] in flower.
