The bottom of the yellow sands are here therefore about 409 feet above the Astronomical Station. Where they were first seen 10 m. E. of the Astronomical Station they were about 180 ft. above the level of that place leaving a dip amounting to about 239 ft. in the 30 miles from here to the broken country visited June 28 & 29.

Two antelope killed today. One by Sapper ..son [?] One by Carvele.

July 4. Occupied changing plants & writing up diary. Also walked out & examined some exposures near here without however finding anything remarkable.

Men dug up a couple of indian graves today. Piles of stones on a conspicuous ridge. Found in one some remains of bones of a child & one bone head. In the other discovered nothing, though from hardness of ground & number of imbedded stones difficult to explore thoroughly.

Found ripe strawberries in sheltered grassy valley. Also Amalanchear berries nearly ripe.

Stuart called attention to curious star on night of second [July]. Looked at it with telescope & saw that evidently a comet. Could not see it last night as was cloudy but tonight clearly visible forming the lower lower angle of the base of an isoclis [sic] triangle of which the pole star is the apex, & the most northern pointer the other basal angle. If my sketch made night before last to be trusted must be approaching the sun. It also now appears to be brighter & to have more visible tail. Brightness of nucleous remarkable being equal to star of 3rd Magnitude & the light quite concentrated.
