Oct.9 74. From Calf Mt. to Pembina Depot for lunch. Found haystack about 2 miles before reaching depot & took on loads of hay.

P.M. came on to Duck Swamp about 9 m. found no water there but camped & sent horses to water at a lake 1/2 m West.
Featherstone & Galway go on to slew near Grants about 9. m. further.

Geol. In digging a well in Duck Swamp found subsoils below the vegetable mould to consist of very fine & uniform yellowish sand to a depth of 7 or 8 feet. No doubt represents coarser edge deposit of same age as fine sandy clay found at Red R.
