Prairie undulating considerably being near the base of the Coteau. Covered with close growth of short green grass.

June 14. Left camp about 7 & travelled on by Traders Road. Crossed the Souris by an easy ford soon after leaving camp. Found on the bank a recent grave with a little wooden cross set up over it & an inscription in french [sic] that So & So had left Wood Mt. in company with --------

at such a date & that several other traders (names subscribed) coming a few days after had found his body by the side of the stweam & buried him. He had been drowned while trying to cross the swolen[sicl creek.

Saw an antelope & had a pretty good shot at it at 300 yds but did not hit.

A chain of lakes in an old valley runs N. of the creek for some distance after the ford.

After noon halt started at 3 P.M. & again forded the stream, this time being rather difficult for the oxen, being a steep slope on the landing side. Came on about ten miles more before could find a place with good enough grass for horses. Oxen stayed some miles behind.

Country after first ford & especially after second becomes less
