pins. The chimney at the top has a flap on each side, each of which is supported by a pole & can be slewed round to suit the wind & prevent back draught. Behind the camp a couple of poles set up with wamtons? [Medicine Bundle?] very like rag dolls. A bundle of coloured rags & streamers, an antelope skin &c tied up in a bunch & fluttering in the wind.

Boswell while out shooting found a couple of scalps on a small pole which had apparently been lost in the bushes or hidden away there some time ago.

Sept 19. Engaged packing specimens, writing up notes & getting rations &c arranged for departure. Both astronomical parties arrived from the S. Early in the afternoon.

Got McDonald put on to drive a water card for supply of the party & Boswellís & a new man detailed as cook.
DepÙt nearly cleared out this evening & all prepared for a start in the morning.
