Aug 19. Left Camp Akamina at 7 A.M. Such a lovely spot that it may not be again visited for fifty years. Morning dull, foggy, but soon cleared up & became warm. Followed the old trail back to the forks Camp. Several of the men getting a ducking in the beaver pond, which these industrious animals had formed across the track. It was almost girth deep.

Afternoon started alone & rode W along the Kootanie trail from the Forks Camp about 4 miles to note character of rock &c. The trail is pretty good though often climbing up far on the northern hillsides. The stream soon becomes quite a river, a large body of water coming in from the N about 31/2 miles from the camp. Splendid scenery all the way. The valley seldom widens out to form anything like a flat & the stream forms rapids & small waterfalls among the rocks in its course. Hemmed in between Mts Yarrel & Kirby & Spence.
