The country has been of better character since leaving the Buttes than E. of them, but has now a very fertile appearance. This may be said to begin about the 3rd crossing of Milk R of the line. The plants which have been sheltering in damp coulÈs now creep out again & cover the hills. The grass is long & luxuriant especially in the hollows where splendid hay. The soil black & rich. Altogether a splendid country of early & late frosts do not occur which from elevation seems probable. Part of fertile belt.
