My own company buried eighteen of the thirty-three bodies which had lain ten days exposed to the elements, the hot sun by day, until they were swollen and changed into awful shapes, too dreadful for our eyes and olfactory nerves, so we had to run a distance every little while during the making of the shallow graves in the rocky soil with entrenching bayonets, and trying to find enough of our scarce blankets into which to pull the bodies for a semblance of decent interment.
