 John Haig 1820-1914
 Ellen Aitcheson

Ellen Aitcheson aged 22 years and they started life together in the town of Potsdam, New York, in the Daily Ridge neighbourhood, so named from an old resident of the area.

They purchased 107 acres of land on which had been a log house and a barn. The bridegroom had earned a pair of steers by working for his cousin, also called John Haig of Lisbon. These he traded with his father-in-law for a yoke of oxen. Ihis yoke of oxen and a cow comprised the farm stock when the young newlyweds started life together.

From time to time, more land was bought until they had 190 acres, A fine frame barn replaced the log one but the family of 9 children were all born in the log house. All the hardships and privations of pioneer life were experienced by them, but sickness seldom entered their home.
