On July 30 the explorers arrived at the bluff. Four days later the Oto Indians, who lived in a village along the Platte River, came to the Lewis and Clark camp for a council.

This was the first of many solemn treaties concluded on this spot, which was to make it a highly successful diplomatic and military post.

Council Bluffs
Taking a suggestion from Lewis & Clark, Fort Atkinson was set up by the Yellowstone Expedition of 1819.
Today reenactors demonstrate those early days at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park.
