Sometimes Polar Bears can even be seen walking along below the bird colonies, looking for casualties that have fallen from above. Such a number of birds need a huge foraging area so it was no surprise that when still far from the island more and more became visible from the ship. Soon they crowded around us like fellow passengers in the barbecue line!

The most numerous species is the Thick-billed Murre, which may number as many as 180,000 pairs! Other breeders include Black Guillemot, Northern Fulmar and Black-legged Kittiwake.
