The Arctic Islands had been transferred from Britain to Canada in 1880, but it was not until 1897 that Canada took any active interest in exerting its sovereignty. In 1903,there was an official expedition into the High Arctic and between 1906 and 1911, the Canadian government sent three official voyages to the High Arctic, to show the flag and collect customs duties from whalers.

Canada was becoming increasingly concerned over the activities of foreigners in the area and eventually a series of Royal Canadian Mounted Police posts were set up in the High Arctic.
Early posts were established at:

Pond Inlet -1921

Craig Harbour on Ellesmere Island -1922.

Dundas Harbour -1924

Bache Peninsula -1926

Lake Harbour in 1927.

Dundas Harbour RCMP Station
In 1933 for a time Dundas Harbour post was leased to he HBC.
