Beauty Through the Mist
June 27, 2008 — Peter Bay, Northern Kamchatka, Russia

Following in the wake of Bering, we have been calling into small coves and bays. Sometimes there are small seasonal fishing camps used by the local inhabitants, who in this region are mainly Koryak and Chukchi. This morning we stopped at St. Peter Bay, named after one of Bering's two ships. While Joan went birding I climbed with others to a most pictureque little lake.

After lunch we headed 4 miles for a view of distant walruses. Later a zodiac armada got us a closer look. Returning, a ghost ship was the result of an unusual cloud formation.
