Next Day
October 22, 2004 — Day 5

After breakfast we left the city again admiring huge homes on the outskirts of Hangzhou. Part way along we stopped to experience a Chinese truck stop then continued our journey. Approaching Shanghai we encountered people holding signs at the side of the road. We were informed they were not hitch hiking but rather offering to guide visitors to their destinations. It was pointed out that often they got lost themselves.

Not feeling that great, my lunch was beer and a special Chinese ginger concoction — said sure to cure me so there would be no surprises aboard the plane. We continued along and boarded a plane at the Shanghai domestic airport for a flight to Yichang, Everything went fine aboard Shanghai Air. Thankfully, I had the sense to stay away from the mystery food provided on the flight. In Yichang, before supper, we visited Three Gorges Museum where they are making an effort to show that they are saving artifacts found in areas soon to be flooded. Of course, the last room was where they are selling found artifacts with authenticity papers provided. (Hmm...Is there something wrong with this concept?) No pictures were allowed. I expect they were worried items might be copied to be sold as the real thing.

After dinner we travelled to the MS Emperor, where we would spend the next four nights. Displaced farmers had been hired bring down our luggage.
