There were no advertisements for the VW Beetle until 1959. The cars sold themselves.

Locally, there were general service ads (left) or small ads for the many used cars the dealer was collecting as trades.

Reliability was such that Volkswagen gave a gold watch to every owner whose car reached 60,000 miles without repair; no big deal today, but we're talking the early 60's, folks, when such a feat was a genuine accomplishment.

Unlike other vehicles of those days Volkswagen had a reputation for durability. It really was true that the Beetles's doors fit so tightly that closing them would be easier if a window was first opened.
