The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute are pleased to welcome its two newest members, Drs. Trushar Patel and Athanasios Zovoilis.
Dr. Patel is an assistant professor who joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute in April 2016. The unifying theme of his research is to study multi-domain proteins, protein-protein and protein-nucleic acids complexes that affect various cellular processes and diseases. He employs cell biology, biochemical and biophysical methods to understand how biomolecules recognize each other and identify the functional implications of such interactions.
Dr. Zovoilis joined the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Alberta RNA Research and Training Institute in January from Harvard Medical School in Boston. Zovoilis is a rising star in RNA bioinformatics and genomics, whose research vision is inspired by convergence of human genetics with recent advances in RNA biochemistry and computational sciences. It is at the intersection of these fields that Zovoilis tackles complex research challenges to elucidate the complexity of our non-coding genome and its role in cancer
