University of Lethbridge signs MOU with university in India to examine partnership opportunities

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

The University of Lethbridge has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chandigarh University in India, which aims to capitalize on collaborative opportunities.

U of L Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Andy Hakin and Dr. Rajinder Singh Bawa, the Vice-Chancellor of Chandigarh University, signed the agreement at the U of L campus during a special ceremony on June 8, 2017.

The wide-ranging pact includes a commitment to examine student exchanges, curriculum development, as well as teaching and research partnerships.

“The University of Lethbridge is a globally networked institution,” says Hakin. “This agreement has the potential to be particularly beneficial to our students in terms of exchange opportunities, and also more holistically, through the continuing internationalization of our campus.”

The genesis for the agreement occurred during a visit made by U of L President Dr. Mike Mahon to Chandigarh University earlier this year.

Located in the Punjab, Chandigarh University is a private institution and attracts more than 30,000 students from across India and 30 countries. It was previously a private college, Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Gharuan, affiliated to Punjab Technical University. Chandigarh University is ranked among 'Asia's Best & Fastest Growing Private Education Institutes' by WCRC (World Consulting & Research Corporation).

The University of Lethbridge is the academic home to 550 international students from 70 different countries. Currently, Indian students represent 5 per cent of the total international student body on campus.

“MOUs such as this serve to create conduits for knowledge, research, capacity-building and academic exchange that contribute to the continued internationalization of the University,” says Paul Pan, executive director, International at the U of L.
