Religious Rights and Freedom of Conscience: Are they always compatible with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

Monday, Nov. 26, 7 to 9 p.m., Lethbridge Public Library Community Room, Main Branch

In this special SACPA session, Drs. Katharina Stevens, a U of L philosophy professor, and James Linville, Chair of the U of L’s Department of Religious Studies, join Geoffrey Capp, a member and election candidate with the Christian Heritage Party, to talk about the Charter and religious rights and freedom of conscience. The topic hit the news last year when the federal government announced changes to its Canada Summer Jobs program, requiring applicants to attest that their mandate and summer job respected the Charter.

The U of L Bookstore is pleased to host the authors of Bert Riggall’s Greater Waterton, A Conservation Legacy. The book has made the long list in the Banff Mountain Film Festival Book Competition and includes essays from a number of excellent authors, including southern Alberta’s own Sid Marty.

Language & Culture — Take Two Speaker Series

Thursday, Nov. 29, 3:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Dr. Inge Genee, a professor in the Department of Modern Languages, will talk about some of the ways in which the vocabulary and grammar of Indigenous languages can be used to understand modern and traditional practice and how oral and written sources can contribute to understanding, revitalization and reclamation. Genee is joined by Dr. Kevin McGeough (BA ’96), a geography professor, who will talk about some of the methods scholars use to understand ancient languages, such as the writing systems of the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia and the Near East.

The Trends and State of Volunteerism — Downtown Lunch Hour Speaker Series

Diana Sim, executive director of Volunteer Lethbridge, will discuss the bigger picture of volunteering in the Lethbridge community, with a focus on local involvement and how everyone can give back.

Why LBGTQ2S+ Mental Health Research Matters

Friday, Nov. 30, noon to 1:30 p.m., L1102, Library

Dr. Peter Kellett, a health sciences professor, will discuss how the burden of mental illness is often disproportionately experienced by members of the LGTBQ2S+ community and the contributing factors. He makes a case for the need to invest in research and programming for members of the LGTBQ2S+ community that acknowledge the complexities of addressing these issues.

Natural Disasters and District Power: How Political Scientists Think About Electoral Effects of Place

Friday, Nov. 30, 3 to 4:30 p.m., AH176, Anderson Hall

Dr. Melanee Thomas (BA ’03), a professor at the University of Calgary, will discuss a case study using the City of Calgary and the municipal election that was held four months after the devasting floods of June 2013. Results showed support for the incumbent mayor increased over the city, but at a lower rate in poll divisions that experienced residential flooding. She’ll talk about the concept of district power and how it can be used to help explain election outcomes.
