High River Mayor Craig Snodgrass — Water Talks

In this session of the Water Talks seminar series, Snodgrass will talk about the resiliency of the High River community in response to the 2013 flood. Since he was first elected in 2013, Snodgrass has worked with town councillors, residents, business owners and town staff to build a community of creative thinkers and innovative builders.

How Dickens Invented Christmas—and Why it Matters — PUBlic Professor Series
Thursday, Nov. 24, 7 to 9 p.m., City Hall Atrium
Dr. Goldie Morgentaler, a U of L English professor, will discuss the forgotten history of the classic Dickens’ novel A Christmas Carol. Published in 1843, A Christmas Carol was not intended to be a feel-good fairy tale but an enraged tirade against the evils of capitalism. The book was an instant success and provides an example of how great writing can influence culture and how vital literature can be to the well-being of society.

Birth Pangs: Medical and Cultural Constructions of Female Bodies and Labour Pain in Turn-of-the-Twentieth-Century Canada

Dr. Whitney Wood, a postdoctoral fellow at Birkbeck, University of London, will discuss how women’s bodies during pregnancy and labour were viewed in the early 1900s.
