5 Days for the Homeless

Sunday, March 12, 5 p.m. to Friday, March 17, 5 p.m., U of L bus loop

Students will once again be forgoing the comforts of central heating and a soft bed to raise funds for the Wood’s Homes Youth Shelter. This year’s goal is to raise $10,000. Students will be sleeping outdoors by the Students’ Union building near the bus loop.

Mike Perry, the U of L’s archivist, will be talking about drawings and plans from the Arthur Erickson fonds, or aggregation of documents, at the Canadian Architectural Archives.

Women Scholars Speaker Series

Tuesday, March 14, noon to 1:30 p.m., AH100, Andy’s Place

Dr. Cheryl Bartlett, professor emerita and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Integrative Science at Cape Breton University, is originally from southern Alberta. She has worked closely with two Mi’kmaq elders to create an integrative science program guided by the principle of ‘two-eyed seeing’ (learning to see and use the best in both world views). Their concept has been picked up across the nation and is critical to moving forward in the spirit of reconciliation.

Brain Awareness Week free lecture — Dr. Adrian Owen

Tuesday, March 14, 7 to 9 p.m., Yates Memorial Centre

Dr. Adrian Owen, the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Cognitive Imaging and Neuroscience at the University of Western Ontario, will discuss his research which uses neuroimaging to study disorders of the consciousness resulting from brain injury. Media are invited to interview Owen at 11 a.m. at the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience (CCBN) in EP1201 (conference room).

A Slow Start, Some Bright Lights, A New Day — How the U of L emerged as a research leader

Drs. Reginald Bibby and Bryan Kolb will share their experiences and anecdotes about how research at the U of L has grown since the 1970s and the impact it’s had on the community.

The U of L gallery is home to an extensive collection and this exhibition brings together work from the collection with stories from the people who have made the gallery what it is today.

Meeting of the Minds — Graduate Students’ Association annual conference

Friday, March 17, 5 p.m. to Saturday, March 18, 8 p.m.

The conference kicks off Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Markin Hall Atrium with the finals of the Three Minute Thesis competition. Starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, graduate students from multiple disciplines will be presenting their work and networking with other researchers.
