University of Lethbridge highlights for the week of December 4 to 10

International Human Rights Week Celebration

Tuesday, Dec. 5, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., various locations

Everyone is welcome to attend any or all of the activities that are part of this celebration, which aims to convey the importance of human rights, equality and respect. A forum and an open workshop lead off the activities from 9:30 a.m. to noon in AH100 (Andy’s Place). A forum with the Alberta Human Rights Commission is scheduled for 1:40 to 3 p.m. in SU300A (Students’ Union). The day wraps up with a meet and greet with the Support Network for Academics of Colour, also in SU300A.

Hour of Code

Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1 to 3 p.m., Atrium, University Hall

To celebrate Computer Science Education Week, AGILITY is offering Hour of Code, an introduction to computer science. Everyone is welcome to try out self-guided coding tutorials, interact with OSBots & Little Bits (robots) and the Lulzbot Mini 3D printer. More information can be found on the AGILITY website.

Stress Less Fest

Wednesday, Dec. 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Atrium, University Hall

Students are invited to celebrate the last day of classes and stress less about finals by trying a variety of stress-busting activities, from making a stress ball to playing with Lego. The library will also be offering its stress-free zone from Dec. 8 to 17 from 6 to 10:30 p.m. so students can take a break from studying with free coffee and snacks, games, movies, puzzles, colouring books and a Lego table (Level 10).

Orange You Gonna Stop for an Orange?

Wednesday, Dec. 6, various times and locations

On National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, U of L Sexual Violence Support ambassadors will be handing out oranges around campus and sharing 16 ways everyone can help end violence against women. In 1991, Parliament set aside Dec. 6 as a day to mark the anniversary of the 14 young women who were murdered at l’École Polytechique de Montréal in 1989 and to give Canadians an opportunity to reflect on violence against women.

Book Launch

Thursday, Dec. 7, 6 to 9 p.m., Dr. Foster James Penny Building, 324 5 St. S.

Two U of L faculty members, Drs. Kristine Alexander and Heidi MacDonald, will introduce their newly published books. In Guiding Modern Girls, Alexander examines the Girl Guide movement in England, Canada and India during the 1920s and 1930s, a time of rapid social change that included the enfranchisement of women and the rise of the flapper. In Vatican II and Beyond, MacDonald, one of three authors, looks at the impact of Vatican II through the Canadian Religious Conference and the lived experiences of Sisters Alice Trudeau and Mary Alban.
