University of Lethbridge highlights for the week of April 20 to April 25

The University of Lethbridge has a number of events lined up this week that may be of interest to your readers, viewers and listeners. Members of the media who are interested in covering these events are encouraged to contact the individual event organizer directly.

5 Days for the Homeless — cheque presentation

Monday, April 20, 10 a.m., 312 3 St. S., Woods Homes

Students from the U of L’s 5 Days for the Homeless fundraising effort will be presenting a cheque to Woods Homes, a local youth emergency shelter. The 5 Days event took place from March 8 to 13 and students from the Management Students’ Society went homeless to raise funds and increase awareness in this seventh annual campaign.

U of L Library — Stress-Free Zone

Daily from April 20 to 28, 6 to 10:30 p.m., L1114, Library

Classes are over but students are hitting the books full-time as they prepare for final exams. The library’s stress-free zone gives students the chance to take a break from studying and have a snack, a cup of coffee, play a game or just chill out for a while. On Monday and Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. in L1008A and L1008B, they also have the opportunity to de-stress with a therapy dog, courtesy of the Student Success Centre.

Art Department — Open House 2015

Tuesday and Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., 8th floor, Centre of the Arts

Faculty of Fine Arts Advanced and Senior Studio students will be exhibiting artworks they have created this year. Visitors will be able to see the personal studio space of aspiring artists and the facilities where their art is produced. Works include sculpture, digital fabrication, painting, drawing, photography, film, printmaking and multimedia installation art. The public is invited to the closing reception and awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Prentice Institute Brown Bag Series — Personalized Medicine and Asian DNA

Wednesday, noon to 1:30 p.m., L1102, Library

Dr. Shirley Hsaio-Li Sun, a sociology professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, will discuss research that shows how pharmaceutical companies often rely on information about the frequency of a particular genetic mutation in populations characterized by race and ethnicity as they make decisions about the kinds of medical interventions they develop.

Faculty of Education — Professional Inquiry Project Symposium

Friday, April 24, 2 to 4 p.m., L1170A, Curriculum Laboratory

Current and past education students in their third and final professional semester will be sharing their Professional Inquiry Projects, including a review of iPad applications for use in an elementary school, building a feeling of community in a classroom, and a project to help students build character and find joy. The presentations are expected to wrap up between 3 and 4 p.m. so interested media are advised to come around 3:30 p.m.
