Residence students impacted by generosity of University of Lethbridge Volunteer Award winners

Friday, June 2, 2017

University of Lethbridge residence students don’t know who Bette and Pete Greidanus are when they first arrive on campus, but by the time they leave, they’ve become two of the most important people in their university experience.

On Thursday, the University of Lethbridge recognized Bette and Pete Greidanus for their tireless commitment to supporting U of L residence students by presenting the couple with the 2017 University of Lethbridge Volunteer Award.

Bette and Pete have made an indelible impression on the lives of countless U of L residence students.

The couple launched a new approach to the move-in process for residence students, and over the past 19 years fine-tuned the complicated, logistical puzzle of move-in day to the point where it is now a smooth, supportive and unforgettable first experience for new students.

Beyond that, Bette and Pete have opened their home and their hearts to residence students by hosting dinners – up to 25 students at a time, sometimes 10 times per year – as a welcoming gesture of encouragement. These dinners give residence students a taste of the home they are missing and often longing for as they navigate the start of their university experience. A home-cooked meal with good conversation and fellowship has proven to be just the tonic of support many a homesick student has needed.

Bette and Pete have also fostered a campus culture of volunteering. Through the generosity of their time and spirit, they have inspired and recruited dozens of volunteers each year, many of whom return year after year, having been shown the difference even the smallest gesture can make in a student’s life.
