Potions and pumpkins promised for annual U of L Spooky Science Weekend

Thursday, October 11, 2018

The eighth annual Spooky Science Weekend gives children aged five to 12 the chance to participate in a variety of Halloween-themed science activities in three separate events at the University of Lethbridge on November 2 and 3. The hands-on science activities expose children to several different streams of science and spooky fun!

Children will have the opportunity to create high-flying ghostly rockets, race mysterious floating coffins, make supernatural slime, brew up some unusual potions and watch exploding pumpkins. Participants are encouraged to come out in their spooky costumes.

Registration, on a first-come, first-served basis, opens Saturday, Oct. 13 at noon and is free but mandatory. To register, go to Spooky Science EventBrite. For safety reasons, no more than 100 children can attend a single event and children must be accompanied by an adult. Accompanying adults do not need to register.

WHEN:            Friday, November 2, 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, November 3, 2 to 4 p.m.; Saturday, November 3, 6 to 8 p.m.

WHERE:           Atrium of University Hall

Spooky Science Weekend is organized each year by U of L science graduate and undergraduate students who volunteer for the national Let’s Talk Science Outreach program. Their goal is to share their passion for science with children of all ages, increase the public accessibility of science and inspire students to pursue careers in science. Activities for the event have been designed by graduate student volunteers in several different science disciplines. Overall, more than 20 graduate and undergraduate student volunteers will assist during the day to make it a fun and inspiring experience for everyone involved. ABOUT LET’S TALK SCIENCE:

The Let’s Talk Science Outreach program at the U of L targets local high schools and is managed by graduate student volunteers in the sciences. This program enhances the science experience of students, in particular in high schools, and provides graduate students with the opportunity to grow their skills in science communication, thereby strengthening the connection between the University and the local schools. In the last years, the Let’s Talk Science Outreach program at the U of L has conducted numerous school visits to high school, middle school and elementary school classes in Lethbridge and southern Alberta, offered teachers’ workshops at the Teachers Convention, and has added to the scientific program at the Lethbridge Science Fairs by offering tours of research laboratories and numerous hands-on activities for participants.

The Let’s Talk Science Outreach program at the U of L is supported by the national Let’s Talk Science organization. Let’s Talk Science is an award-winning, national, non-profit, science outreach organization that creates and delivers science-learning programs and services that turn children and youth on to science, keep them engaged in learning and develop their potential to become 21st century citizens, innovators and stewards.
