Radio and X-ray telescopes spot giant explosions launching matter into space from neutron stars

ULethbridge team part of international cohort behind discovery An international team of astronomers, including University of Lethbridge astrophysicist Dr. Alex Tetarenko, have performed a unique experiment probing astrophysical jets being expelled into space at nearly the speed of light. The material and energy in these jets was liberated when huge explosions occurred on the surface of a celestial object called a neutron star.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) announced funding through several grant programs today and three University of Lethbridge projects are among those receiving awards. The Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant on behalf of the Honourable Francois-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced over $1.8 billion in federal research support, including $35.3 million for 577 research projects at 66 Canadian institutions through SSHRC Insight Development Grants.
