With a second crane scheduled to be installed on Tuesday, Big Yeller will soon have a companion, albeit a bit shorter, on the Destination Project site. The addition of the second crane means the Destination Project will begin to take shape in a more visible way.
The second crane, shipped from the PCL yard in Nisku to the University of Lethbridge on nine semis, is needed to ensure crane access to every corner of the Destination Project, something Big Yeller cannot do alone. An additional crane is needed to help erect the second crane, and, weather permitting, it should be operational by Wednesday afternoon.
Since the University of Lethbridge received the green light for the project from the Alberta government back in June, much of the work has focused on site preparation, and underground and foundation work. The project, about 10 per cent completed, moves into a new phase where construction work will be above the ground. The number of workers on the project will gradually increase over the next few months, up to approximately 250 by next August.
Media are invited to attend a briefing on the project on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at The Grove. The Grove is located east of Markin Hall and provides a hilltop view of the Destination Project. Daryl Campbell, PCL senior superintendent, and Gene Lublinkhof, project manager, will be on hand to answer questions about the crane and its operations and the Destination Project in general.
In the event of inclement weather, the briefing will be moved to the Atrium in Markin Hall.
