Eager campers will top-off their week of learning with a trip to a cattle ranch

Destination Exploration, in collaboration with Carlson Cattle Company and Dr. Lorraine Beaudin, will be offering its very first Farm Camp – July 23-27. Campers will discover how science and technology helps keep fresh food on the table through hands-on experiments and activities. The week of camp will be topped off with a visit to a beautiful working ranch, west of Magrath.

Led by veteran instructors Sam Macphee and Humaira Enayetullha, the camp is intended to inspire youth to think about where their food comes from while learning something new.

“This will be the first time that some of these children are seeing cattle up close on a working ranch,” says Program Coordinator Laura Keffer-Wilkes. “We want them to have fun and to also understand that food production is complex and requires technology, science and engineering to keep everyone well fed.”

Activities will see campers growing their own bean, building a tractor, using a virtual sandbox to learn about topographic maps, and enjoying visits to the Campus Roots Community Garden and Dr. Rene Barendregt’s geology lab. For the final day of camp, Beaudin has invited the campers to her property to see ranching in action.

Destination Exploration Summer Camps are organized by an amazing team of dedicated staff. Camp instructors have put in a great deal of effort to make this summer a great one for campers. Camp is also made possible by wonderful volunteers, and management staff.
