Friday, November 10, 2017

WHAT: 15th annual Cardboard Boat Race, hosted by Career Transitions

WHEN: Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, 9:40 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

WHERE: Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre and 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness, University of Lethbridge

The University of Lethbridge will host 200 students from across Southwestern Alberta for the annual Cardboard Boat Race, one of the most exciting and anticipated events of the school year. Given only a few sheets of cardboard, a cutting tool and some tape, students work in groups to construct boats they hope will hold for both a timed race and a weight challenge.

A total of 50 student teams compete in two divisions: Senior (grades 10–12) and Junior (grades 7–9). In addition to points for speed in the timed race and time afloat during the weight test, teams are evaluated on their design, construction quality, teamwork and visual appeal.

Construction of the cardboard boats will take place between 9:40 and 11:30 a.m.on the indoor track in the 1st Choice Savings Centre for Sport and Wellness. The races and weight challenge will occur between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. in the Max Bell pool. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. in room PE250.

Members of the media are welcome throughout the construction of the boats and races. Further information can also be found on the Career Transitions website, careersteps.ca
